Do or Don't: Polka Dots

polka dot

Polka dots tend to be a style trend that runs hot and cold for me, but lately I am really wanting to buy a few signature pieces to add back into my collection. I like the classy but casual feel of these items together (the Kate Spade bracelet is a fun alternative to the standard polka dot bracelet).

Are you a fan of polka dots? What are some fashion trends that you have a love/ hate relationship with?

Moment of Silence

I wanted to take a minute to share this article regarding the Hyuro controversy in Atlanta and the ultimate destruction of this beautiful piece of art.
I recently posted about a street art adventure that J + I took (read more about it here) and this mural was one of the most magical pieces we saw. If you were to go to the corner oSawtell and McDonough Blvd SE today, you will find the ghost of the woman and wolf that once brightened a dark intersection.

Monica Campana, Founder and Executive Director of Living Walls, said it best:
"Paint on this wall made for a beautiful mural, people talking about it made for a beautiful conversation. A public space was created and all of a sudden this dead intersection became more human. The mural belonged to all of us, to the ones that liked it and to the ones that didn't, it was our dialogue, it was our challenge, but now it's gone. Now we are back to ignoring that space again, now we are back at thinking that erasing the evidence will make us think this never happened. It hurt so much to paint over the wall, to destroy something someone else put so much heart and passion into. It was a painful process, but what hurt the most was that for the first time I felt like I had to censor myself. It was a weird feeling, a confusing and ugly feeling that I never want to experience again."

So let's take a moment to remember this amazing piece of art and all of the brushstrokes of the artist Hyuro, and all of those who tried to fight the censorship of art in Atlanta. It is truly a sad day.

What are your thoughts on the decision to remove this mural?

"Each person can take it the way they want to, because it is for everyone ...and at the end, if it gets painted over, know that the gray paint will not hide the fears of no one, but if anything It will make those fears more visible" - Hyuro

Savannah Wedding Weekend

We are so excited about this weekend!
We are heading down to Savannah, GA to attend our lovely friends' wedding! It is surely going to be one of the most beautiful weddings in history. We are bringing Townes and hopefully while we are there we will have a dog date with one of my great friends from highschool. We also hope to find time to make it to Tybee Beach this weekend!
We are staying in an incredible carriage house that my best friend and her boyfriend found on airbnb (the same site we used to book our berlin flat).
Isn't this place amazing?
The owner has been so wonderful to work with and we feel so lucky that this will be our home away from home while in Savannah!

We cannot wait to celebrate with Shayda + Lockett! Check out their adorable save the date video below!

Aren't they the cutest?

Hope you have a magical weekend!

Girl from the North Country

One of my favorite things to do in the Fall is open all of the windows in our bedroom and turn on the record player. I'm not sure why these things all go together so well in my opinion, but i absolutely love it!

Bob Dylan's  Nashville Skyline album will always be in my top 5 and the song "Girl from the North Country" still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it (it also always makes me think of my best friend Beth ♥).
I hope that this song and the perfect harmony between Dylan and Johnny Cash voices bring you some joy today!

P.S. A bit of trivia: did you know that the sound of Dylan chewing gum is recorded on the album (as well as shown on this film clip recording)?

ATL Street Art Tour

The other weekend, J had the best adventure idea! He suggested we go on a street art tour of Atlanta!
We mapped out some of the walls using the All City Street Art App and the Living Walls website.

We started in Decatur and worked our way down towards Dekalb Avenue and then hit a bunch of art on Edgewood Avenue. By this point, we were hungry for lunch so we stopped at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market - we enjoyed some Venezuelan sandwiches from Arepa Mia. My sandwich had black beans, feta, and plantains - it was so good! We also enjoyed some tostanes and sugar cane lemonade.
Then our tour took us towards Five Points and Lakewood. We got to see the incredible Hyuro piece that's causing a lot of unnecessary outrage in Atlanta - sadly the piece is being painted over so we wanted to make sure we saw it before it was gone forever. It was beautiful and it's a shame that people cannot appreciate it as art.
We ended our tour in East Atlanta before heading home. It was such a fun excursion and we saw over 30 different pieces! This is a must-do for anyone in the Atlanta area!

Runner's High

I have been adding new routines to my fitness regiment and it feels great!
I have never been a runner - I have never enjoyed it and always been quick to give up/ walk. J recently started training for the upcoming Southern Odyssey Relay race that he is running next month with coworkers (it goes from Atlanta to Chattanooga). J's enthusiasm about running got me interested in giving it another shot and although it's still a struggle, I can officially run over 3 miles without stopping for the first time in my life!

Last week, I ran a total of 10 miles!
The Map My Run App is so user-friendly and helps keep me motivated (having good music on my iPhone and cooler weather helps too). Whenever I get tired and think I can't make it to the top of the next hill, I keep reminding myself that "strong is the new skinny!"

I still go to my weekly Zumba and Cardio Funk classes and hope to add some more Yoga and Pilates, but it's nice to add a new workout and see how it helps my body and my strength.

This is a small victory for me, but I think it's worth celebrating every victory! Life is too short to focus on  shortcomings!
