Thursday Tunes: Anna & Elizabeth

I am loving this NPR Tiny Desk session with Anna & Elizabeth!
I am a huge fan of multiple parts of their concert: Appalachian music, banjo, fiddle, storytelling, and amazing harmonies. Being such an advocate of the human voice and capturing stories and music, I love what these women are doing. It's also awesome that they sound incredible!

Hope you enjoy them as much as I do! Check out more of their music here.

Lastly, if you love Appalachian music, check out the movie "Songcatcher" that shows a bit of how folk music was recorded in the poor Appalachian states in the early 1900's. There's a great duet, "When Love Is New", with Dolly Parton and Emmy Rossum on the soundtrack.

Thursday Tunes: Surf Rock

Happy Thursday!
Our company's upcoming annual conference has one night event with a retro surf theme so I guess you could say it's inspired me to listen to some of my favorite surf songs.
1. Sleepwalk by Santo + Johnny
2. Misirlou by Dick Dale + The Deltones
3. Surfer Girl by The Beach Boys
4. Walk, Don't Run by The Ventures
5. Surfer Girl by Homegrown
6. Pipelines by The Ventures
7. I'll See You In My Dreams by Cliff Edwards
8. Surf Wax America by Weezer
9. Sleepwalkin' by Modest Mouse
10. The Surfer Moon by The Beach Boys

The 5th song by Homegrown makes me miss my best friend Kelly and think of our high school days!

Are there any tracks I'm missing?

Enjoy!

Thursday Tunes: Air

Although this Air song "Venus" is from 2004, it's still one of my favorites.
This song (from the album, Talkie Walkie) came on when I was shuffling through my iPod the other day and made me so happy. This French duo from Versailles was one of my favorite bands in college and this song brings back so many memories.

I'm also a huge fan of this hyper-lapse video of the ocean.
Enjoy!

Thursday Tunes: NPR's Invisibilia Podcast

This week's listening suggestion is a little different: a podcast.
Like most people, after the podcast, Serial, ended, I wanted to find a new podcast to listen to while commuting to work. I ended up finding Invisibilia and was hooked right away. The podcast
"Invisibilia (Latin for "all the invisible things") explores the intangible forces that shape human behavior – things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions."

Since I studied Psychology in college, I've always been fascinated by human behavior and the way in which people interact with each other and their surroundings. Each week has a different theme and features stories of unique people (like Martin Pistorius (not to be confused with Oscar Pistorius) and Daniel Kish).

Some of my favorite episodes include the "The Secret History of Thoughts" and "Fearless."
Go listen to the episodes and I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Enjoy!

Thursday Tunes

Happy Thursday guys!
In honor of our pup's birthday earlier this week, I wanted to share one of his namesake's live performances. I've heard this song, "The Hole," plenty of times, but I heard this live version on Atlanta's AM 1690 station the other week and it has resonated with me since.

Not exactly the feel-good song of the year, but so powerful. Townes's voice and these lyrics are incredible.

If you aren't familiar with Townes Van Zandt, check out the documentary "Be Here To Love Me." You can watch it in full here. You're welcome.

Thursday Tunes

With Halloween right around the corner, one of my favorite movies to watch this time of year is Edward Scissorhands. It's such a good movie: amazing actors (Vincent Price!), beautifully tragic story line, and Danny Elfman did the full music score.

The scene with Winona Ryder spinning under the falling snow/ ice feels so magical - especially with the instrumental song, The Ice Dance, playing in the background.

The Ice Dance is top of my list for favorite movie instrumental pieces (Amélie features some, as well)! When I close my eyes, I feel like I'm pulled away to a whimsical world. It's amazing the way music can do that.

Enjoy!

What's your favorite score from a film?

Thursday Tunes: Boysetsfire [Reunion Tour]

I heard this song on my iPod the other day and it reminded me so much of my high school and early college days when going to hardcore shows 3-4 times a week was standard... crazy that was like 10-15 years ago! This song, After the Eulogy, by Boysetsfire always ignited something inside me. The guitar breakdowns, the lyrics, and the energy...priceless. It was awfully fun to sing along to when they played too - everyone always went nuts!

This video was their last song played at their final show before they broke up in 2009, so it's pretty awesome to see. It's a shame Philly wasn't closer or else I would have loved to have been there.

They are actually doing a 20 year reunion European tour (Berlin and Koln are 2 of the 4 cities, I believe). Check out those dates here. Wish I could go!
Apparently they will play some US dates too...would be pretty fun to relive those moments.
Although I may be too old for head-walking these days!
Who's with me?

RISE! RISE! RISE!

Thursday Tunes: Saintseneca

Anytime you combine a band from Appalachia with bunch of unique instruments (banjo, baglama, bulbul, balalaika, bowed banjo, and baritone ukulele) and some female vocal harmonizing, you can pretty much assume that I'll be a fan.

Saintseneca is no exception.
Listening to this Tiny Desk concert while it's foggy outside seems very fitting this morning. It's been a crazy week (and will continue to be insane next week, as well) so it's nice to chill out with my headphones in and get as much done as possible.

The band is playing the Earl in Atlanta on November 16th so if you're in town, you should go!

Thursday Tunes: Party In The USA

A few years ago, my friend Matt Miller took this amazing video at a local ATL hardcore show. It makes me laugh and smile every time!
It's great seeing so many friends in this video and it makes me wish I had been there!
Matt also shot our wedding...check out Matt's amazing photography here!

Enjoy partying in the USA while I am in Europe!
As of today, I'm officially kicking it in Paris.

Au revoir...

Thursday Tunes: Grizzly Bear "Two Weeks"

Although this video is pretty creepy (actually, it's really creepy), the song "Two Weeks" by Grizzly Bear is one of my favorites. Every time I hear this song, it makes me smile and feel so happy.

This song is especially inciting smiles today, because exactly 2 weeks from now, I'll be in Paris, France with Lily (and Jeremy)! Since their European adventure will be ending in a few months (you can read more about their adventure here) and because they will be in Paris for almost a month, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit!

The idea of walking the streets of Paris (with a baguette in hand) with my best girl, Lily, is so exciting.
We are going to have the best time and I just can't wait!
Stay tuned for more France-inspired posts!

Thursday Tunes: The Moondoggies

The Moondoggies have been one of my favorite bands for a couple of years now.
Check out this post I did on them back in 2010 (it blows my mind that I've had this blog for 4+ years, by the way).

This is their new music video for their song, Stop Signs. Road trip, anyone?

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, they have some shows coming up so make sure you go! They are a great band to see live!

Leading Men Playlist

For this week's edition of Thursday tunes, I wanted to share some of my favorite songs by some of my favorite male singers within the "folk/ indie" category (I'm not sure about this, I hate music labels).

These songs are ones that make me feel happy, energetic, sad, or nostalgic so although I know they are all over the board, but I hope you enjoy them!

Thursday Tunes: Typhoon

The NPR Tiny Desk series is a great way to find new artists and bands.
Today I'm really enjoying this band, Typhoon. They have 11 members and are currently based out of Portland, Oregon.

Enjoy!

What band are you currently listening to?

Thursday Tunes: Wild Child

I'm really into this song, Pillow Talk, by the band Wild Child right now so I figured I'd share it with you!

It shouldn't be too surprising that I like it since it's played on the ukelele and is a male/ female duet.
There's something so whimsical about the song, despite the sad message in the lyrics.

Enjoy!

Make Out Music

There are some songs that are undeniably meant to be listened to while making out...among other activities. Everyone expects artists like Al Green or Marvin Gaye, but I figured I'd share some of my favorites.

The first track, Talk Show Host, is definitely my all time favorite. The teenage version of myself would like to believe that it's not because this song was on this soundtrack. Some of these are more soft and slow, while others are...not.
Hope you enjoy and put these songs to good use.

April in Paris

Do you ever look at a photo and just wish you could insert yourself in it? This is a photo of people dancing in the streets of Paris, France. This is the kind of stuff my dreams are made of.

A few years ago, we went to the Clärchens Ballhaus dance hall in Berlin, Germany. Clärchens Ballhaus opened in 1913 and is still in operation today! When we went to swing night there, I was in awe of all the dancing in this historic dance hall...
While I sit in my office, I'll be listening to the below swing mix and thinking of April in Paris...

1950's Love Mix

This mix has some of my all-time favorite classic love songs.
I oddly find my love and knowledge of oldie songs kind of a bragging right. I think I may have been born during the wrong decade (despite being glad to have missed Vietnam, WWII, etc.).
I definitely got my love of the 1950's from my dad.
I can be found dancing to this playlist in the kitchen most nights and weekends.

What decade should you have been born in?

Thursday Tunes: Winter Song

I have always been a huge fan of The Head And The Heart and this song is no exception.
The video is beautiful and the title "Winter Song" is so fitting for the feeling lately: " Summer gone, now Winter's on its way."

Oh, and I also want to ride the Seattle ferris wheel now (despite my huge fear of ferris wheels).

Enjoy my dears!
